Ham Radio

Sigh… in all of my spare time…

When I was a kid, maybe 11 or 12-ish, my father became briefly fascinated with Amateur Radio (“HAM” radio, if you will). I think it was more of a potential father-son thing we could do. One of his good friends was a local “HAM” instructor, and Dad actually invested in some HAM equipment and we started thinking about getting licensed. Unfortunately, everything else got in the way, so there you have it.

Along the way, I’ve actually collected more than a few radios. I’m a pilot, so had to get an aviation radio license. I’m a frequent boater, and so ditto marine radio. (Ironically, you do NOT have to have have to have a US radio license to operate a marine radio in the US, but you do if you go boating in other countries.) I even worked in broadcast radio back when I was a teenager, at a local radio station, so I still have THAT license laying around here somewhere.

Anyway, cut to the chase, I decided recently to get a HAM radio license. Why? Again, all that spare time… So, if you do that sort of thing, I’m now legally “KK7AII” on the amateur radio bands. Hope to see you there!
